In 1974 the Ariel V satellite first detected the object now known as SS433 in x-ray wavelengths. SS433 was found to be variable and located in the same area as the supernova remnant W50. This early evidence led to the prescient suggestion that SS433 might be a compact object such as a neutron star or black hole. Since this region of the sky is crowded with bright, interesting x-ray sources, the discovery inspired little fanfare. A few years later the first images of SS433 showed the spectacular jets seen here. The x-rays may be caused by hot plasma, which is produced when ejected material collides with the interstellar medium, or they may be caused by synchrotron radiation.
